Squirrel season
The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission is considering extending the hunting season for red and gray squirrels to the end of February, a time when many squirrels have young in the nest.
According to the North Carolina Wildlife Federation, which opposes the change, about 80% of female squirrels are lactating in February.
The current hunting season is from Oct. 1 to Feb. 13.
The public can weigh in on this and other proposals online at www.ncwildlife.org or by mail to 1701 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699-1701. Comments must be submitted before Friday.
